The rain hadn’t stopped since he’d found the photograph. It hammered against the granite face of the rock formation, a relentless percussion that echoed strangely within Elias’s skull. He knelt closer to the crevice, the wind whipping strands of his dark hair across his eyes, blurring the already distorted image – a young woman with an impossibly bright smile, holding aloft what looked like…a map stitched onto velvet.
He hadn't slept properly in days. The photograph, discovered tucked into the back of his grandmother’s cedar chest, had become an insistent pulse in his life. It wasn't just a picture; it felt *charged*, humming with a low-frequency vibration he couldn’t quite place. He’d initially dismissed it as a whimsical snapshot from her youth, but the more he looked at it, the more certain he became that it was something…more.
He traced the lines of the map with his finger, the rain plastering the velvet to his skin. The symbols were archaic, almost alien – stylized waves intertwined with constellations he didn’t recognize. Then, a flicker. Not visual, but *felt*. A sudden, sharp resonance, like striking a tuning fork, resonated through him, briefly intensifying the image of the woman's smile. He gasped, pulling back instinctively.
“Elias?”
The voice was dry, measured, and utterly devoid of warmth. Silas stood at the mouth of the crevice, his grey eyes fixed on Elias with an unnerving intensity. He hadn’t moved since he’d been sketching in his notebook a few minutes ago, seemingly oblivious to the storm or Elias's discomfort. “You shouldn’t be out here,” Silas said, his voice carrying surprisingly well despite the wind.
“I… I was just examining the photograph,” Elias stammered, feeling acutely aware of Silas’s scrutiny. He hadn’t anticipated a visitor, especially not one who seemed to exist on the periphery of his reality – an observer rather than a participant. “It seems…significant.”
Silas tilted his head slightly, a movement that seemed almost mechanical.
