The overhead bulb of Elias’ apartment cast a sickly yellow light across the chaotic sprawl of his desk. He hadn’t slept properly in days, fueled by lukewarm coffee and an obsessive focus on the photograph. It was a portrait of his grandmother, Evelyn Blackwood, taken sometime in the 1930s – a woman with sharp eyes and a strangely serene expression that had always seemed to hold a secret. Elias rotated the photograph slowly, the aged paper crinkling slightly under his fingertips. He’d spent countless hours scrutinizing it, trying to unlock its hidden meaning, but tonight something was different.

He paused, leaning closer, magnifying glass in hand. It wasn't a conscious decision; it was as if the photograph itself was drawing him in. Then he noticed it – a faint shimmer around the edges of her eyes, like heat rising from asphalt on a summer day. He blinked, thinking it was a trick of the light, but it remained. The shimmer pulsed almost imperceptibly, and for a heartbeat, Evelyn’s expression seemed to shift subtly, as if she were… looking at something beyond him.

A memory surfaced – one of Evelyn, sitting beside him on the porch swing, repeating her mantra: “You must see the stars in everything, Elias. They are not just points of light; they are stories.” He’d always dismissed it as a quirky eccentricity, a harmless obsession with the night sky. But now, staring at this photograph, he wondered if there was more to her words than he’d ever realized.

Driven by this sudden intuition, Elias grabbed his worn leather satchel and headed out for another visit to Mr. Silas’ Antique Shop. The shop was a labyrinth of forgotten treasures – clocks frozen in time, dusty books with crumbling spines, and the faint scent of beeswax and aged paper. Mr. Silas, a man perpetually shrouded in a cloud of pipe smoke, regarded Elias with a knowing glint in his eye.
